APTA HQ

Take a look at an exemplary association headquarters.

Located in Alexandria, Virginia, the APTA Centennial Center is a LEED Silver project. The new headquarters for the American Physical Therapy Association was opened on the 100th anniversary of the association’s founding.

Encouraging movement is vital in physical therapy, and it was also a design focus for the new building. Special attention was given to the building’s stairways to encourage and highlight movement within the building, by exposing the stairways in the design from the exterior and creating an intuitive flow to the interior spaces from the stairs. The connecting public plaza warmly welcomes the community to the center. The building’s thoughtful movement-motivated design carries on in the plaza’s landscaping.

Public health was also a major focus of the project design team. The site selection rehabilitated a heavily contaminated industrial site into a space that celebrates health and well-being. It is important for the APTA Centennial Center to enhance public awareness of the effect the environment has on human movement, health and safety.
